In 2020, Beirut, Lebanon, was rocked by one of the most powerful non-nuclear blasts in history. A warehouse fire at the port ignited 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate that had been improperly stored and ignored for years. The resulting detonation, equal to 1.1 kilotons of TNT, shook the city like a magnitude 3.3 earthquake.
The explosion ripped through entire neighborhoods, killing 218 people, injuring around 7,000 others, and leaving about 300,000 homeless. The blast didn't just devastate a city-it exposed years of corruption and negligence that turned Beirut's port into a ticking time bomb.
