Meijer and her team published a study in Proceedings of the Royal Society B showing that when they placed hamster wheels outdoors, wild animals-including mice, rats, frogs, and even snails-voluntarily ran on them. The researchers conducted the experiment to determine whether wheel-running was a natural behavior or a captivity artifact, and they also found that animals returned repeatedly to use the wheels over time.
