Henry George (1839-1897), an influential American economist and social reformer, though now forgotten, was once regarded as one of the most important public figures of his time. When he died suddenly of a stroke in 1897, more than 100,000 mourners attended his New York City funeral, drawn by his groundbreaking ideas on economic justice, which inspired the Progressive Era and even influenced the creation of Monopoly.
