Wright Brothers' Flight Agreement

Although the Wright Brothers made their historic flight in 1903, aviator Gustave Whitehead claimed to have flown two years earlier, in 1901. To protect the Wrights' legacy, the Smithsonian Institution signed an agreement with the Wright estate stating that if they ever recognized an earlier flight, they would forfeit ownership of the Wright Flyer.
