Iceland's New Island Emerges

On June 5, 1967, a cook on a fishing boat south of Iceland spotted a column of smoke in the distance. As the crew moved closer to assist, they discovered a volcanic eruption in the middle of the ocean. This eruption lasted seven months, ultimately creating a new island named Surtsey.
