1980s Coca-Cola Ad Image Scandal

1980s Coca-Cola Ad Image Scandal

In the mid-'80s, Coca-Cola ran a "Feel the Curves!" campaign in South Australia to promote its iconic contour bottle, using posters featuring a Coke bottle surrounded by ice cubes. One ice cube concealed a hidden depiction of oral sex, inadvertently included by a graphic artist who treated it as an inside joke. The entire campaign-estimated at distributing thousands of posters across Sydney-was swiftly recalled and destroyed, the artist was fired, his agency was sued for hundreds of thousands of dollars, and no replacement posters were issued.
