Eddie Slovik was court-martialed for desertion during World War II, and he is the only U.S. soldier who was executed (1945) for purely military offenses since the American Civil War. He deserted, believing prison was preferable to combat, and he anticipated a light sentence. However, authorities executed him to deter others from similar actions.
