In Antarctica, research centers "heat their refrigerators" to prevent food from over-freezing and to allow for thawing, as the external temperatures are colder than typical refrigeration. Much of the food served to researchers is often expired because supplies are shipped annually, and the extreme cold preserves their safety and edibility despite the expired dates.
