Norway's Unique Monarchical Election

After gaining independence from Sweden in 1905, Norway offered the throne to Prince Carl of Denmark. He accepted only if the people voted for a monarchy over a republic. With 79% in favor, he became King Haakon VII, the only king elected by popular vote.
