Lyodura Prion Disease Scandal

Lyodura was introduced in 1969 and was used as a quick and effective freeze-dried dural patch in brain surgery, rehydrated to seal leaks during neurosurgical procedures. Unbeknownst to users, it was made from cadaveric dura harvested through a black market corpses, carried Creutzfeldt-Jakob prions, and despite the company's attempt to improve safety in 1987, the product remained on the market until its 1996 ban, by which time over 150 people had been infected.
