Hitobashira: Ancient Japanese Ritual

Hitobashira was a cultural practice in Japan that involved burying people alive under buildings before construction. It is no longer practiced today. It fell out of use by the 16th century and was carried out to appease Shinto gods and supernatural forces, believed to protect structures like bridges, castles, and dams from disasters such as floods, fire, or enemy attacks.
