Newark, New Jersey, was founded in 1666 by Puritans from Connecticut seeking to build a theocracy. They named it "New Ark," believing they were creating a new Ark of the Covenant. The settlement remained a Puritan theocracy until 1746, when Episcopalian missionaries finally established a church.
