Blister Beetle

Blister Beetle

Blister beetles secrete cantharidin as a defense mechanism, which can cause severe chemical burns and be lethal if ingested. Their prowess as an irritant is well known, and cantharidin has even been used externally to remove warts, moles, and tattoos. As it makes its way out of the body, it irritates the lining of the urethra-causing little or no external irritation in women but significant swelling in men, sometimes resulting in a long-lasting erection. Despite the unpleasant side effects, ancient traditions included giving small doses to bridegrooms or taking a dose before special occasions.
