Yew Tree

Yew trees can live over a thousand years and are steeped in history, often found in graveyards and associated with death. All parts except the berry's flesh are highly toxic to humans and animals, with no known antidote. However, this deadly tree has saved lives-its bark once produced paclitaxel (Taxol), a potent chemotherapy drug. After learning it killed the tree, scientists synthesized the compound, which has been treating cancers since its approval in 1992.
