Robespierre’s Botched Suicide Attempt

During the French Revolution, Maximilien Robespierre, upon realizing he was to be executed, attempted suicide by shooting himself in the mouth. The attempt failed, leaving him with a shattered jaw. When he was taken to the guillotine, the executioner tore off the bandage holding his jaw together, causing him to scream in agony before the blade ended his suffering.
