The human body begins decomposing almost immediately after death, largely due to the billions of bacteria residing in the gut. Over time, this bacterial activity transforms fatty tissues into a waxy, soap-like substance known as adipocere, or more commonly, grave wax. This process, called saponification, can preserve parts of the body under certain conditions.
