The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa volcano was so loud that people heard it over 3,000 miles away-the equivalent of hearing a sound from Ireland while standing in Boston. The explosion ruptured the eardrums of sailors more than 40 miles away, and the resulting eruptions and tsunamis killed over 36,000 people.
