The Sack of Magdeburg (1631)

In 1631, the Imperial (Habsburg) troops sacked the Protestant city of Magdeburg during the Thirty Years' War, resulting in the slaughter of more than 20,000 inhabitants. After the battle, the Pope sent congratulations, stating, "You have washed your victorious hands in the blood of sinners."
