Contrary to the assumption that Roman persecutions killed vast numbers of Christians, estimates suggest no more than a few thousand were executed over three centuries. In contrast, during the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre of 1572, up to 10,000 Christians were killed by fellow Christians in a single event of religious violence in France.
