The Sand Creek Massacre (1864)

In 1864, the Third Colorado Cavalry, under Colonel John Chivington, attacked a Cheyenne and Arapaho village at Sand Creek in southeastern Colorado. Despite the villagers waving white surrender flags, the soldiers killed hundreds, mainly women and children. They mutilated the victims' bodies, taking trophies such as scalps and genitalia.
