In 1937, Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo ordered the massacre of 20,000 to 35,000 Haitian migrants near the Dominican-Haitian border. Dominican soldiers identified Haitians by asking them to pronounce the word "perejil" (parsley) in Spanish, as Haitians often mispronounced it. Most victims were killed with machetes or bayonets to obscure military involvement.
