In April 1942, during World War II, Japanese forces forced American and Filipino soldiers to march 96.6 km (60 miles) from Mariveles to San Fernando in the Philippines with little to no food or water while subjecting them to physical abuse. This brutal event, known as the "Bataan Death March," followed the surrender of approximately 76,000 Allied troops after the Battle of Bataan.
