Before Saladin, the first Sultan of Egypt and Syria and founder of the Ayyubid dynasty, died in 1193, he had given away all his wealth to his poor subjects. His estate by then only consisted of one piece of gold and 40 pieces of silver, which was not even enough to pay for his funeral.
