German U-boats Terror

German U-boats terrorized the East Coast of the United States in the spring of 1942, sinking fuel tankers and cargo ships with impunity, often within sight of shore. In less than seven months, they destroyed 22 percent of the tanker fleet and sank 233 ships, killing 5,000 people-more than twice the number who perished at Pearl Harbor.
