The tradition of celebrating sports victories with Champagne emerged in the 1930s when Champagne merchant Count Chandon (of Moët & Chandon) presented bottles to winners of the French Formula 1 Grand Prix. The race took place on the renowned Reims circuit, in the heart of the Champagne district.
