Sumer, the First Civilization

Sumer was the first known civilization in southern Mesopotamia, dating back to between 6,000 and 5,000 B.C. Its writing dates back to around 3000 B.C., with the oldest texts coming from the cities of Uruk and Jemdet Nasr.
