After World War II, Japanese General Hitoshi Imamura faced an Australian military court in Papua New Guinea for failing to control troops who committed atrocities under his command. The court sentenced him to 10 years, which he served at Sugamo Prison in Tokyo until his release in 1954. Believing the punishment was too light for his responsibility, Imamura built a replica of the prison in his garden and voluntarily confined himself there until his death in 1968.
