In May 2006, Australian mountaineer Lincoln Hall collapsed with cerebral edema at approximately 8,600 meters near Mount Everest's summit in the Himalayas and was declared dead after rescuers failed to revive him. Hall then survived an entire night without supplemental oxygen, shelter, or proper equipment in the death zone. At sunrise, American mountaineer Dan Mazur's team found him sitting upright, half undressed, and missing his gloves and hat before Hall calmly said, "I imagine you are surprised to see me here." Hall is widely regarded as the only person to survive an exposed night without shelter at such an extreme altitude.
