Xia Boyu Finally Summits Everest

In 1975, Chinese mountaineer Xia Boyu suffered severe frostbite during his first Mount Everest expedition in the Himalayas after giving his sleeping bag to a sick teammate, forcing doctors to amputate both feet. Lymphoma later led to the amputation of both lower legs in 1996, but Xia continued climbing with prosthetic limbs. An avalanche ended his 2014 attempt, Nepal's earthquake stopped him in 2015, and a blizzard forced him back just 100 meters from the summit in 2016. On May 14, 2018, the 69-year-old reached the summit on his fifth attempt, becoming the second double amputee to conquer Everest and the first to do so from the Nepalese side.
