In early 1906, the Paris edition of the New York Herald asked whether the Wright brothers were "Flyers or Liars?" as much of the press and public continued to doubt their flights. More than three years later, on September 29, 1909, Wilbur Wright flew and circled the Statue of Liberty as more than one million New Yorkers watched. On October 4, he flew again, completing a roughly 20-mile round trip from Governors Island to Grant's Tomb and back in about 33 minutes.
