In 2025, Croatian freediver Vitomir Maricic set an official Guinness World Record by holding his breath underwater for 29 minutes and 3 seconds in a 3-meter pool. Before submerging, he spent 10 minutes breathing pure oxygen, which Guinness permits in its oxygen-assisted category. Years of specialized training helped him tolerate rising carbon dioxide levels, while remaining motionless reduced his oxygen consumption. Maricic warned that the stunt required professional preparation and should never be attempted without expert supervision.
