British poet John Milton is credited with introducing about 630 words into English, compared with roughly 229 attributed to British playwright William Shakespeare. Cambridge University English lecturer Gavin Alexander reached those totals by searching the Oxford English Dictionary for the earliest recorded uses. Milton's credited additions include "pandemonium," "sensuous," and "complacency," along with using "space" to mean outer space.
