Chewbacca Defense Entered Legal Language

After South Park aired "Chef Aid" on October 7, 1998, the term "Chewbacca defense" entered the legal lexicon for a strategy that deliberately confuses a jury instead of refuting the opposing case. The episode parodied American lawyer Johnnie Cochran by having him argue that Chewbacca's supposed decision to live among the Ewoks made no sense, so the jury had to acquit his client. Lawyers already recognized such distractions as red herrings or irrelevant conclusions, but South Park gave the tactic its memorable name.
