Yugoslav president Josip Broz Tito used to follow a custom of Serbian kings by visiting parents after the birth of their ninth child, congratulating them, and giving them money. He also became the child's godfather, though he initially applied that tradition only to ninth sons. After critics called the practice sexist, Tito extended it to daughters.
