In 1939, British major general Bernard Montgomery issued his soldiers in France a circular on preventing sexually transmitted diseases. Senior Church of England and Roman Catholic chaplains objected to its blunt language, and Montgomery nearly lost his command. His superior, British General Alan Brooke, defended him and allowed the circular to stand but warned him against another such mistake.
