In some U.S. states, "dead red" laws let motorcyclists proceed through a red light when its sensor fails to detect their bikes. A rider can otherwise wait through a signal cycle without ever getting a green light. Washington requires riders to stop, wait one cycle, and proceed with due care; Pennsylvania also lets drivers of other vehicles treat a malfunctioning red signal like a stop sign.
