Asia's 12,000 Bile Farm Bears

There are 12,000 bears on bile farms across Asia. Extracting their bile involves surgery to insert a catheter or create an opening through the abdomen. A 2011 estimate valued the worldwide trade in all bear parts, including bile, at $2 billion. Bear bile is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine.
