PLA's 10,000 Backup Messenger Pigeons

In 2010, a division of China's People's Liberation Army began training 10,000 messenger pigeons to carry military communications if war disabled modern systems. The birds were expected to fly at speeds of up to 75 mph (120 km/h) while carrying loads of up to 3.5 ounces (100 g).
