Batman Comeback Mirrored Rocky III

According to story co-writer David S. Goyer, The Dark Knight Rises (2012) modeled its central comeback arc on Rocky III (1982). He and director Christopher Nolan wanted an aging, physically frail Bruce Wayne to be defeated by an opponent who was physically superior, then struggle back to his feet. That premise led Goyer to suggest Bane, although Nolan initially considered the character silly. Goyer later said they were "literally" retelling Rocky III.
