Empire Strikes Back Ending Changed

After The Empire Strikes Back (1980) opened in approximately 100 theaters on May 21, George Lucas decided its ending did not clearly show that Luke and Leia were aboard a medical frigate while Lando and Chewbacca occupied the Millennium Falcon. ILM used the three weeks before the wider 35mm release to create three new effect shots establishing the positions of the two ships, while editors extended the score and altered how some dialogue sounded. Wider audiences therefore saw a subtly different ending.
