According to guitarist Herman Li, DragonForce earned only about $3,000 in royalties from the inclusion of "Through the Fire and the Flames" in the Guitar Hero series. The song first appeared as a notoriously difficult unlockable track in 2007's Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and later returned in other installments. Despite the small payment, its appearance helped turn the song into the band's best-known recording.
