Day of Wrath Exploited Distress

While filming the witch-burning sequence for Day of Wrath (1943), Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer had actress Anna Svierkier tied to a wooden ladder and left her there while the cast and crew went to lunch, despite objections from two actors. By the time they returned, Svierkier was perspiring heavily, and her genuine physical discomfort appears in the finished scene.
