In 1950, after years of trials, Australia released the myxoma virus as a biological control against its invasive rabbit population. Within two years, the virus killed 99.8% of infected rabbits and cut the continent's estimated rabbit population from 600 million to roughly 100 million. Surviving rabbits gradually developed resistance, so myxomatosis failed as a permanent solution to Australia's rabbit problem.
