Most of the cast of The Good Place and many of its rotating directors filmed the first season without knowing its twist ending. Series creator Michael Schur told only Kristen Bell and Ted Danson among the cast from the beginning, while the writers knew so they could plant clues throughout the season. Schur waited until near the end of filming to reveal that the supposed Good Place was actually the Bad Place. He said the secrecy helped the actors deliver honest performances because they believed the same lie as their characters.
