The first intentional LSD trip was undertaken by Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann on April 19, 1943. Hofmann had first synthesized LSD in 1938 and accidentally absorbed a small amount on April 16, 1943, becoming the first person known to experience its psychedelic effects. Three days later, he deliberately ingested 0.25 mg (250 micrograms) and, after the effects began, rode home through Basel with his laboratory assistant. The event is now commemorated as Bicycle Day.
