Dorothy Thompson Expelled From Germany

The first American journalist expelled from Nazi Germany was Dorothy Thompson, who interviewed Adolf Hitler in 1931 while reporting from Europe. She later described him as "insecure" and "the very prototype of the little man." Her critical reporting, including her book I Saw Hitler, led the Nazi regime to order her expulsion in 1934. On August 25, a Gestapo agent delivered the order to her Berlin hotel, giving her 24 hours to leave.
