During the 1924 British Mount Everest expedition, British mountaineers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine made the team's final attempt to complete the first ever Mt. Everest ascent. On June 8, a teammate last saw them climbing about 800 vertical feet below the summit before clouds concealed them, and neither man returned. Searchers found Mallory's body 75 years later, in 1999, but could not find the photograph of his wife, Ruth, that he had reportedly promised to leave at the summit. The missing photograph supports the theory that Mallory may have been the first man to reach the Everest top.
