In 1909, Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen planned an expedition to reach the North Pole and explore the Arctic Basin. After American explorers Frederick Cook and Robert Peary separately claimed that they had already reached it, Amundsen redirected his expedition to Antarctica. He left Oslo aboard Fram in June 1910 and established Framheim at the Bay of Whales in January 1911. On December 14, 1911, Amundsen and four companions became the first party to reach the South Pole, arriving one month before the group led by British naval officer Robert Falcon Scott.
