Milkshakes Began As Whiskey Eggnog

When the term milkshake first appeared in print in 1885, it described an alcoholic whiskey drink similar to eggnog rather than today's ice cream treat. One account called it a "sturdy, healthful eggnog type of drink" made with eggs and whiskey and served as both a tonic and a treat. Before electric blenders became widespread, people made milkshake-type drinks by hand-shaking crushed ice with milk, sugar, and flavorings. By 1900, the name referred to chocolate, strawberry, or vanilla drinks, and people began adding ice cream during the early 1900s.
