Soviet Submarine Fired Sixteen Missiles

In 1991, the Soviet Delta IV-class submarine K-407 Novomoskovsk became the first ballistic missile submarine to launch all 16 of its MIRVed submarine-launched ballistic missiles in one salvo. During Operation Behemoth-2 in the Barents Sea, the crew launched them from a depth of 50 meters with 14 seconds between missiles. The 224-second salvo expelled more than 650 tonnes of mass from the submarine. The first and last missiles completed full flights to the Kura Missile Test Range in Kamchatka, demonstrating that a submarine could safely launch its entire missile load in rapid succession.
